Fando
and Lis (Fando et Lis) — 1955 by Fernando
Arrabal: List of Characters
Fernando
Arrabal’s Fando and Lis has a small cast of characters. The play focuses
primarily on Fando and Lis, while several other figures appear during
their journey toward Tar.
1. Fando —
The male protagonist of the play. He travels with Lis and pushes her in a cart
because she cannot walk. He is affectionate toward Lis at certain moments but
can also be impatient, possessive, cruel, and violent. His memories of
childhood and his troubled relationship with Lis form an important part of the
action.
2. Lis —
Fando’s companion and the female protagonist. She is unable to walk and
therefore depends physically upon Fando. She shares his desire to reach Tar and
remains emotionally attached to him despite his unpredictable and often cruel
behaviour.
3. Nameless
Man / The Three Travellers — Three mysterious travellers whom
Fando and Lis encounter during their journey. They contribute to the strange
and dreamlike atmosphere of the play and become involved in conversations and
episodes that interrupt the couple’s journey.
4. Fando’s
Mother — A figure from Fando’s memories. Although she does not
function as a conventional participant in the present action, she appears
through Fando’s recollections and is connected with his troubled childhood.
5. Fando’s
Father — Another figure associated with Fando’s memories. His
presence belongs largely to Fando’s recollections of the past and helps reveal
the disturbing experiences that have shaped Fando.
6. The
Boy / Child Figures — Childlike figures associated with Fando’s
memories and recollections. They contribute to the presentation of his
childhood experiences and the mixture of memory and present reality in the
play.
