List of Characters in The Room (1957)

1. Rose Hudd

The central character of the play. Rose is a middle-aged woman who lives with her husband, Bert, in a boarding-house room. She talks constantly, values the warmth and safety of the room, and becomes increasingly anxious as unexpected visitors disturb her sense of security.

2. Bert Hudd

Rose's husband. He remains almost completely silent for most of the play, speaking only near the end. His sudden violent attack on Riley forms the dramatic climax of the play.

3. Mr. Kidd

The elderly landlord or caretaker of the boarding house. He is absent-minded and frequently contradicts himself, creating confusion about the house, its occupants, and the basement.

4. Mr. Sands

A young man who arrives with his wife looking for a vacant room. His visit unsettles Rose and increases her fear that her secure home may be threatened.

5. Mrs. Sands

The wife of Mr. Sands. She accompanies her husband during their search for accommodation and participates in the awkward conversation with Rose.

6. Riley

A blind Black man who comes from the basement to deliver a message to Rose. He calls her "Sal" and tells her that her father wants her to come home. His arrival changes the course of the play and leads to its dramatic conclusion.
