Flora – Edward's wife. She is gentle, practical, imaginative, and sympathetic.
Unlike Edward, she treats the matchseller with kindness and curiosity.

The Matchseller – A mysterious old man who stands silently outside Edward and
Flora's back gate. He carries a tray of matches and remains almost completely
silent throughout the play, making him one of the most enigmatic characters in
modern drama.
