Paradise
Lost
by
John Milton
(Book 7 Summary)
In
the seventh part of John Milton's "Paradise Lost," we explore the
creation of the world and humanity. The angel Raphael narrates this tale to
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, using vibrant descriptions and discussions
about theology.
The
book begins with Milton invoking Urania, the muse of astronomy, to help him
capture the magnificence of God's creation. Raphael starts by explaining that
after Satan's fall and the rebellion of his angels, God decided to fill the
void by creating a new world and a new race: humans.
Raphael
tells the story of how God sent his Son, the divine Word, to bring order to
chaos and shape the universe. The Son, with boundless power and wisdom, created
the Earth from nothingness, separating land from water, bringing forth light,
and establishing day and night.
The
narrative continues with Raphael describing the creation of various elements,
such as the sun, moon, plants, and animals. He emphasizes the beauty, harmony,
and purpose in God's creation, pointing out the intricate details and delicate
balance in nature.
The
climax of the story focuses on the creation of man, made in God's image and
given reason, free will, and the ability to know and love God. Man is entrusted
with dominion over the Earth and its creatures, with the responsibility of
stewarding God's creation.
The
book concludes with the establishment of the Sabbath, a day of rest and worship
marking the completion of God's creation. Raphael's account leaves Adam and Eve
in awe and gratitude for their existence and the beauty of the world.
