Paradise Lost

by John Milton

(Book 10 Summary)

In the tenth part of Paradise Lost, we switch back to Heaven. God is well aware of Adam and Eve's wrongdoing. He reassures the guardian angels that their failure to stop Satan from entering Paradise wasn't their fault; it was Adam and Eve's choice. God then sends his Son, the Messiah, to pass judgment on Adam and Eve.

The Messiah comes down to Paradise and confronts Adam and Eve, who feel embarrassed about being naked. The Messiah asks them about their disobedience, and they admit their guilt. The Messiah gives them a tough sentence, saying they will be kicked out of Paradise and will have to endure hard work, pain, and death.

But amidst the gloom, the Messiah gives a ray of hope. He predicts that a descendant of Eve will defeat the serpent, symbolizing the eventual victory of good over evil. This prophecy brings some comfort to Adam and Eve, who were feeling hopeless because of their mistake.

Meanwhile, Sin and Death, monstrous beings created by Satan's rebellion, travel from Hell to Earth. They build a bridge over Chaos, connecting the underworld to the mortal world. This bridge represents the easy path of temptation and sin now available to humanity.

Satan, feeling triumphant, returns to Pandemonium, where he is cheered and applauded. But his victory is short-lived. The fallen angels, now turned into serpents, start devouring each other, their once beautiful forms twisted into grotesque shapes.

This chaotic and destructive scene highlights the consequences of Satan's rebellion and the corrupting influence of sin. It also hints at the challenges humanity will face in the future, dealing with the temptations of sin and the certainty of death.
